Description

Composition

Each Sirdalud MR capsule contains 6.864 mg of Tizanidine HCL, which is equivalent to 6 mg of the active ingredient, Tizanidine. In addition to the active component, the capsule also contains a range of inactive ingredients, including hydrochloric acid, ethyl cellulose, shellac, talc, corn starch, sucrose, gelatin (bovine source), titanium dioxide (E 171), black iron oxide (E 172), pure water, N-butyl alcohol, propylene glycol, isopropyl alcohol, and denatured alcohol.

Sirdalud Mr Capsule Uses

Sirdalud MR is primarily prescribed for the following conditions:

  1. Reducing muscle spasticity associated with neurological disorders such as multiple sclerosis, chronic myelopathy, degenerative spinal diseases, cerebrovascular disease, brain injury, spinal cord injury, and cerebral palsy.
  2. Symptomatic treatment of painful muscle spasms associated with musculoskeletal conditions.

Mechanism of Action

Sirdalud MR works by acting as an agonist at α2-adrenergic receptor sites, which presumably reduces spasticity by increasing presynaptic inhibition of motor neurons. The effects of Tizanidine are most pronounced on polysynaptic pathways, and the overall effect of these actions is thought to reduce facilitation of spinal motor neurons, thereby reducing muscle spasticity and spasms.

Dosage and Administration

Starting Dose

The recommended starting dose for Sirdalud MR is one 6 mg capsule once daily. If necessary, the dose may be increased gradually by one 6 mg capsule at half-weekly or weekly intervals.

Standard Dose

The standard dose of Sirdalud MR is 6–24 mg once daily. Clinical experience has shown that the optimum dose for most patients is 12 mg once daily, with a 24 mg/day dose being required only in rare cases.

Special Considerations

  • In severe cases, an additional dose of 2 or 4 mg may be taken at bedtime.
  • The initial daily dose should not exceed 6 mg, given in three divided doses.
  • The optimum therapeutic response is generally achieved with a daily dose of between 12 and 24 mg, given in three or four divided doses.
  • A total daily dose of 36 mg should not be exceeded.

Dosing Schedule

Sirdalud MR can be taken up to three times in one day, with 6 to 8 hours between doses. It is important not to exceed three doses in a 24-hour period.

With or Without Food

Sirdalud MR can be taken with or without food, but it is recommended to take it consistently in the same manner each time.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Sirdalud MR should only be used for daily activities that require relief from muscle spasms.
  • Do not exceed three doses in a 24-hour period, as excessive dosage can damage the liver.

Heart Health

Sirdalud MR can cause changes to the normal heart rhythm, including an irregular heartbeat called QT prolongation. Individuals with a history of heart disease should consult their doctor before taking this medication.

Liver Health

Patients with serious liver problems should not use Sirdalud MR. If any symptoms related to liver insufficiency (such as unexplained nausea, loss of appetite, or fatigue) occur, the doctor may decide to monitor liver functions through blood tests.

Interactions with Other Medications

Sirdalud MR may interact with certain medications, particularly fluvoxamine (used to treat depression) and ciprofloxacin (an antibiotic used to treat infections). It is crucial to consult with a healthcare professional before taking Sirdalud MR if you are taking other medications.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Pregnancy

Although Sirdalud MR has no teratogenic effects in rats and rabbits, there have been no controlled studies in pregnant women. Therefore, it should not be used during pregnancy unless the potential benefits clearly outweigh the risks.

Breastfeeding

While only small amounts of Sirdalud MR are excreted in animal milk, lactating women should not take this medication due to a lack of clinical data on its use during breastfeeding.

Side Effects

Sirdalud MR, like any other medication, can cause side effects. Not everyone will experience these, but it’s important to be aware of the potential side effects, which may include:

  • Dizziness
  • Sleepiness
  • Dry mouth
  • Weakness
  • Slow heart rate
  • Hypotension (low blood pressure)
  • Abnormal liver function tests

If you experience any unusual symptoms while taking Sirdalud MR, it’s crucial to consult your healthcare provider immediately.

Alcohol Consumption

While taking Sirdalud MR, it is generally recommended to avoid or limit the consumption of alcohol. Alcohol can increase the nervous system side effects of Sirdalud MR, such as dizziness, drowsiness, and difficulty concentrating. Some individuals, especially the elderly, may also experience impairment in thinking, judgment, and motor coordination when combining alcohol with Sirdalud MR.

Drug Interactions

Sirdalud MR (Tizanidine) can interact with several other medications, which can affect how the medication works or increase the risk of side effects. Here are some key points to consider:

Interactions with Specific Drugs

Fluvoxamine and Ciprofloxacin: Patients taking fluvoxamine (used to treat depression) or ciprofloxacin (an antibiotic used to treat infections) should not use Sirdalud MR, as these drugs can increase the amount of Tizanidine in the body, leading to increased side effects.
Other Central Nervous System Depressants: Sirdalud MR can enhance the effects of other central nervous system depressants, including alcohol, antihistamines, sedatives, tranquilizers, sleeping aids, anesthetics, and narcotics. This can lead to an additive depressant effect on the central nervous system.
Antihypertensive Drugs: Since Sirdalud MR can lower blood pressure, it can enhance the effects of antihypertensive drugs, leading to a significant drop in blood pressure.

General Precautions

  • Always inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you are currently taking, including over-the-counter drugs, prescription medications, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
  • Never start or stop taking any medication without consulting your healthcare provider.
  • Be aware of the potential for drug interactions and report any unusual symptoms to your healthcare provider immediately.

Cyberchondria

The truth is that when we’re sick, or worried about getting sick, the internet won’t help.

According to Wikipedia, cyberchondria is a mental disorder consisting in the desire to independently make a diagnosis based on the symptoms of diseases described on Internet sites.

Why you can't look for symptoms on the Internet

If diagnoses could be made simply from a textbook or an article on a website, we would all be doctors and treat ourselves. Nothing can replace the experience and knowledge of specially trained people. As in any field, in medicine there are unscrupulous specialists, differences of opinion, inaccurate diagnoses and incorrect test results.
