Description
Usage
Doxafin is an antihistamine that is primarily used to relieve allergy symptoms, such as watery eyes, runny nose, itching eyes/nose, sneezing, hives, and itching. It is also used to alleviate the nasal and non-nasal symptoms of allergic rhinitis, both seasonal and perennial, in patients aged two years and older. In addition, Doxafin is prescribed for the symptomatic relief of pruritus, the reduction in the number and size of hives, and other symptoms associated with chronic idiopathic urticaria in patients aged two years and older.
How it Works
Doxafin is a long-acting second-generation H1-receptor antagonist that has a selective and peripheral H1-antagonist action. Histamine is a chemical that causes many of the signs that are part of allergic reactions, such as the swelling of tissues. When histamine is released from histamine-storing cells (mast cells) and attaches to other cells that have receptors for histamine, the cells become “activated,” releasing other chemicals that produce the effects that we associate with allergies. Doxafin blocks one type of receptor for histamine, the H1 receptor, and prevents activation of cells by histamine. Unlike most other antihistamines, Doxafin does not enter the brain from the blood, and therefore, does not cause drowsiness.
Side Effects
Doxafin is generally well-tolerated, but some patients may experience side effects. The most commonly reported side effects include dry mouth, fatigue, somnolence, and myalgia. Less common side effects may include dizziness, headache, and nausea. Patients who experience any severe side effects or allergic reactions should seek medical attention immediately.
Conclusion
Doxafin is an effective medication for relieving allergy symptoms and the nasal and non-nasal symptoms of allergic rhinitis. It works by blocking the H1 receptor, preventing activation of cells by histamine. While it is generally well-tolerated, patients may experience side effects, such as dry mouth, fatigue, and myalgia. Patients who experience any severe side effects or allergic reactions should seek medical attention immediately. If you are experiencing allergy symptoms, speak to your healthcare provider to see if Doxafin may be a suitable treatment option for you.
